Beyond the Adjustment: How Decompression, Shockwave Therapy, and Laser Treatment Work Together
When most people hear the word “chiropractor,” they think of one thing: the adjustment. And while the adjustment remains the foundation of everything we do, it is only one piece of a much larger puzzle.
In my practice, I see patients every day whose problems will not be fully solved by an adjustment alone. A herniated disc compressing a nerve root. Chronic tendon inflammation that has been building for years. Deep tissue damage from a car accident or a lifetime of poor posture. These conditions require a layered approach — and that is exactly what modern chiropractic technology makes possible.
The Power of a Combined Approach
Think of your body like a house. If the frame is crooked — that is your spinal alignment — you need to straighten it. That is what an adjustment does. But if the drywall is cracked, the plumbing is leaking, and the foundation is crumbling, fixing the frame alone is not enough. You need to address every layer of the problem.
That is the philosophy behind combining chiropractic adjustments with spinal decompression, shockwave therapy, and laser treatment. Each therapy targets a different layer of your condition, and together, they create a comprehensive healing environment that no single treatment can achieve on its own.
KDT Spinal Decompression: Relieving Pressure at the Source
Spinal decompression therapy is designed for patients whose pain originates from disc problems — herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, or sciatica caused by nerve compression.
Our KDT Neural Flex decompression table uses computer-controlled traction to gently separate the vertebrae, creating negative pressure within the disc space. This negative pressure does two things. First, it pulls protruding disc material away from the nerve, providing immediate relief. Second, it draws nutrient-rich fluids back into the disc, feeding the cells that need to repair the damage.
Sessions last 20 to 30 minutes, and the process is so gentle that many patients fall asleep during treatment. But the real magic happens over a series of sessions, as the disc gradually rehydrates and the surrounding structures stabilize.
How it complements the adjustment: Decompression creates the space and the healing environment; the adjustment ensures the vertebrae are properly aligned so that space is maintained. Without proper alignment, a decompressed disc is more likely to re-herniate. Without decompression, an adjustment may not fully relieve disc-related nerve compression. Together, they address both the positional and the structural components of the problem.
Piezowave Shockwave Therapy: Waking Up the Healing Response
Shockwave therapy uses focused acoustic waves to stimulate your body’s natural repair mechanisms in damaged soft tissue. It increases blood flow, breaks down scar tissue and calcifications, and triggers the release of growth factors that promote tissue regeneration.
At our office, we use Piezowave shockwave therapy for conditions including plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tendinopathy, tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, chronic muscle trigger points, hip bursitis, and Achilles tendon problems.
What sets shockwave apart from passive therapies like heat or ice is that it does not simply mask pain or reduce swelling temporarily. It actively restarts the healing process in tissues that have become stuck in a chronic inflammatory cycle.
How it complements the adjustment and decompression: After we correct spinal alignment and relieve disc pressure, the soft tissue surrounding the affected area — muscles, tendons, ligaments — still needs to heal. Shockwave therapy accelerates that recovery. It is especially valuable for patients who have been compensating for spinal problems for months or years, because those compensation patterns create secondary soft tissue damage that the adjustment alone cannot resolve.
MLS Laser Therapy: Healing at the Cellular Level
Our Cutting Edge Robotic MLS Laser delivers two synchronized wavelengths of light energy deep into tissue. One wavelength targets inflammation; the other targets pain. Together, they stimulate mitochondrial activity and increase the production of ATP — the molecule your cells use as fuel for repair.
Laser therapy is effective for a wide range of conditions, including chronic neck and back pain, neuropathy and nerve pain, post-surgical recovery, arthritis and joint inflammation, and sports injuries.
Each session takes only a few minutes, is completely painless, and requires no recovery time. Patients often feel a warm, soothing sensation during treatment and notice reduced pain and improved mobility within hours.
How it complements the other therapies: Laser therapy works at the deepest level — the individual cell. While decompression addresses the disc, the adjustment addresses the vertebrae, and shockwave addresses the soft tissue, laser therapy ensures that the cells doing the actual healing have the energy they need to do their job. It is the finishing piece that ties the entire treatment plan together.
A Real Treatment Plan, Not a Menu
I want to be clear about something. We do not use these therapies randomly or treat them like a menu where you pick whatever sounds appealing. Every patient’s treatment plan begins with a thorough examination, including an assessment of your spine, your nervous system function, your posture, your gait, and your specific symptoms. My training in applied clinical neuroscience added another layer to that evaluation — I can now observe subtle neurological markers in how a patient moves, speaks, and tracks with their eyes to identify issues that a standard exam might miss.
Based on that evaluation, we design a plan that uses the right combination of therapies for your condition. Some patients need all four. Some need only an adjustment and corrective exercises. The technology is there to serve the patient, not the other way around.
We also support our patients with additional modalities that enhance the overall healing environment. For patients dealing with food sensitivities that may be contributing to chronic inflammation, we offer MRT testing to identify specific dietary triggers. These are not standalone treatments — they are part of an integrated approach to getting your body functioning at its best.
What I can tell you after more than two decades of practice and thousands of patients is this: the combination approach works. Patients who receive integrated care — adjustment plus targeted therapies — consistently recover faster, experience less recurring pain, and achieve more lasting results than those who rely on any single treatment in isolation.
What This Means for Your Recovery
If you have been dealing with chronic pain, a disc problem, or a soft tissue injury that is not getting better, the answer may not be a single treatment. It may be the right combination of treatments, working together to address every layer of your condition.
At Sleppy Chiropractic Family Wellness Center, we have invested in the technology and the training to offer that kind of comprehensive care — because our patients deserve more than a one-size-fits-all approach.
